It was a huge day for the Red River Valley at the Minnesota boys hockey state tournament on Saturday.
In Class 2A, Moorhead jumped out to a big lead early and then held off a furious rally for a 7-6 win over Stillwater.
“There was no doubt Stillwater was going to rally,” Moorhead activities director Dean Haugo said. “But I truly believe our team was prepared for this situation. This is quite remarkable to do what was necessary to get this first one.”
It’s the Spuds' first state title after eight previous runner-up finishes.
“There are a lot of people up north that are smiling right now and they will be for a long time,” Haugo said.
Moorhead's Mason Kraft scored four goals in the first period — tying a record set by Eveleth's John Mayasich back in 1951.
In Class A, East Grand Forks senior Jace Van Eps scored on a shot from the corner in overtime to lift the Green Wave to a 2-1 win over defending champ St. Cloud Cathedral.
It’s the first title for East Grand Forks in 10 years.
