In the latest development in the ongoing saga of “right to repair” in St. Paul, the State Supreme Court has denied the City Council’s request to stop the “Tenants Right to Repair In Residential Rental Property” ballot initiative. It appears the way is mostly clear now for the measure to appear on the ballot this fall.
The Department of Justice notified Minnesota of its intent to send observers “to ensure transparency, ballot security and compliance with federal law” for the primaries on Tuesday, but Minnesota elections officials said, “Nuh uh.” The observers were not allowed inside polling places in either Hennepin or Ramsey counties and had to stay 100 feet away. Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon:
“I certainly understand why reports of agents of the federal government at the polls would alarm people, especially here in Minnesota, given what we’ve all gone through over the last several months. So, I want to say we are not taking anything for granted.”

The Vintage Music Company in South Minneapolis is for sale. A purveyor of the old and the odd when it comes to music paraphernalia, owner Scott Holthus estimated in 2021 that he had a quarter of a million 78s catalogued in the store. The store will be open until it’s sold, and people can still bring their Victrolas and what have you for repairs until then.
With the Vikings’ first preseason game coming up on Saturday, the team has announced that Kyler Murray will be QB1 to start the season, beating out J.J. McCarthy. Murray comes in on a one-year contract after being released by the Arizona Cardinals and will be the first Vikings quarterback to have a name that’s an agent noun.
And finally: Rod Stewart’s Sept. 1 appearance at the State Fair has been canceled following the rocker’s coronary procedure. Stewart is “already feeling better and very much on the mend.” No word yet from his surgeon on whether the rhythm of his heart is beating like a drum with the words “I love you” rolling off his tongue.
