Two injured in shooting outside Eden Prairie High School homecoming football game

Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries Friday night in a shooting outside the Eden Prairie High School homecoming football game against Minnetonka.

The gunfire at about 8:40 p.m. prompted an evacuation of the stadium and the school grounds.

Eden Prairie Police Chief Matt Sackett told reporters Friday night that “officers were already on scene for the event and responded to what initially came in as a disturbance — and from there, reports were shots fired.”

Authorities said they believe the shooting was targeted and neither victim was a student at Eden Prairie or Minnetonka schools. The shooting remains under investigation, with no arrests as of Saturday morning.

School officials praised first responders, school staff, students and families for their quick response and keeping people safe during the evacuation.

“Tonight was a hard night for our community,” Eden Prairie Superintendent Josh Swanson wrote in a message to the school community. “A night that was meant to celebrate all that makes us Eagles was tarnished by the selfish and violent acts of a few. And yet, in this moment, we saw our community shine.”

“Our community took care of one another and our visitors, leading to an evacuation with zero injuries that was almost entirely complete within an hour,” Swanson continued.

The school district shared additional information about plans for activities through the weekend. As of late Friday night, Swanson said the district was planning to hold classes on Monday “and will have additional resources and staff on site to support students and staff.”

“As with any critical incident, we will learn from this event and continue to improve our responses. Tonight, though, I am so grateful to be part of this community,” Swanson wrote.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz posted on social media Friday night that “state officials are assisting local authorities to find those responsible after a shooting outside the Eden Prairie football game.”

“No homecoming, in any community, should be disrupted by gun violence,” wrote Walz, a former teacher and football coach. “Minnesotans are keeping students and families in our thoughts tonight.”
