Your daily Minnesota news roundup starts … NOW.
Early on Monday morning, federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., apparently connected to an investigation into the immigration paperwork completed by her father when the 44-year-old lawmaker was a child. Why there would be anything connected to that in her home in Washington is not clear. Omar responded, in part, “For 10 years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”

Former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan will meet in a debate for the first time on MPR News on Friday afternoon in the midst of campaigns that seem to have drawn little national attention after a rough and tumble primary. The Senate race as a whole has cost roughly $2 million after a primary that saw $20 million in outside money pour in, mostly on the DFL side.
A recent rise in mortgage rates is scaring off homebuyers, with home showings in the Twin Cities declining precipitously — down almost 18% in the first week of October compared to 2025. With rates now edging up over 7.5%, buyers could be paying hundreds of dollars more per month for mortgages than a year ago.
Rep. Tom Emmer had some things to say this past weekend, declaring that poverty was at its lowest level ever and that grocery inflation had gone from 13% under President Joe Biden to 2% under Trump. However, poverty was at 11.5% in Biden’s first year and went down to 10.2% in 2025 before rising to 12.1% this year. Grocery inflation was at 2.3% at the end of Biden’s term and is now at 3.4%. Other than that, totally right.
In some good local financial news, Xcel Energy is planning to keep its rates flat until at least 2028, buoyed by federal tax credits from investment in battery storage and renewable energy. The company hopes those investments will better backstop a power grid that has struggled with outages in some areas recently.
More details are coming to light on the massive surveillance project enacted by the government to keep tabs on Minnesotans engaged in resisting ICE during Operation Metro Surge, from a summons issued to REI for everyone who bought a certain style of beanie to the infiltration of Signal chats by an undercover agent using the name “peanutbutterjelly.” Frankly, it is an affront to besmirch the good name of a childhood staple, sir or madam.
By the time you’re reading this, a cold front will likely have pushed the last vestiges of summer out of Minnesota for good. Highs in the Twin Cities will top out in the low 60s beginning today and lows could drop to the 30s by this weekend. Get out your cardigans and plaid shirts.
And finally in your Minnesota news roundup: We’re on the cusp of cuffing mating season for deer, and the Minnesota State Patrol would like to remind you not to try and swerve to avoid them should one step in front of your car on a darkened road this fall. Instead brake as much as you can and go right through the deer. Then pull over and call 911. Resist the temptation to get out and check on the deer. It might be looking for revenge.
