Your daily Minnesota news roundup starts … NOW.
This isn’t the first story to dig into it and it surely won’t be the last as we approach Nov. 3, but it’s very much an open question whether Trump’s rough handling of the ag economy through tariffs, a war in the Middle East driving up gas, oil and diesel prices, and continued inflation will cost the GOP in traditionally conservative rural districts.
In other election news, Rep. Lisa Demuth and Sen. Amy Klobuchar held press conferences late last week to address a spate of violence in the Twin Cities metro and outline their plans for dealing with it. Klobuchar flexed her prosecutorial muscles from her time as the Hennepin County attorney — a tenure that featured more trials and prosecutions plus stiffer sentences. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has nominated interim police chief Bill Peterson for the position permanently. Peterson — a 30-year veteran of the force — will be tasked with reforming a department that has spent most of the 2020s being called to task for a variety of shortcomings, overcharging and corruption.
In other police news, the city of St. Paul is suing Maplewood because of Maplewood’s opposition to a police firing range located within their city limits. The range on Linwood Ave. has been used by St. Paul police for over 50 years and has a lease through 2073 (at a time when the Earth will presumably be ravaged by both a deadly virus and a constant stream of attack robots). The data center has come under fire from the DFL’s Jake Johnson, who is running to represent the 1st Congressional District, where Pine Island is located.
A fire on Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon caused massive damage to two connected buildings, including collapsed roofs. Two firefighters were injured while fighting the three-alarm blaze, meaning 50–60 firefighters were called in to respond. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
